Goalie reaction shot

Goalie reaction shot

Pepperdine goalie John Hahn makes a save Thursday night in the Waves' 8-7 win at Long Beach State.

The good: The shows the moment, a ferocious and awesome save. It would definitely be used if the story focused on the goalie; i.e. the goalie had a lot of saves, or the game was low scoring, with one single goal scored at the end.

The bad: I did not track the focus. Look closely - the water droplets are in focus, but not the player itself.

Also, this is a shot of the opponent goalie, not an LBSU goalie. This still ran in the paper, because it was my only clear shot. The writer was very unhappy about that, saying that she got a lot of shit for the shot. However, it's the sports editor who always picks the photo to run.

Where I was: On the side next to the scorer's tables. I was shooting with the 300mm. With that lens and the 20D, the only shots you can get are goalie reaction shots (those shooting with the full-frame D3/D700 or the 1.3x crop EOS-1D have an easier time).
